What are Ice Cables?

What is an ice cable?
An ice cable is a wire heating component that is installed on roof edges and gutters to prevent ice buildup. It may also be referred to as heat tape, heat tracing cables or de-icing cables.
Why do you need ice cables?
Ice cables are installed on particular sections of a home that do not get much sun exposure. These cables also act as a preventative measure to avoid ice and snow build up. The reason for ice dams is due to the constant cycle of thawing and freezing. This causes snow and ice to melt during the day when temperatures are warm and then freeze along the roof edge at night when the temperature drops. Ice cables also help prevent blockage in the gutters and downspouts to keep them flowing.
Properly installed ice cables help minimize the water build up behind an ice dam that cause a leak s. Individuals should understand that if you want to prevent ice dams you need to go to the source. It may be something small, such as sealing a space in your attic, adding more insulation, or providing proper ventilation for your spaces. Their purpose is not to entirely eliminate ice but rather create a clear path for the melted snow to flow through the ice.
The installation process
The installation and function of ice cables is very simple. All installations are different and depend on the home’s needs. Typical places include in the eaves, valleys, low pitched roofs and around chimneys and skylights. Before the process is started, an outlet must be present or nearby the area, in which the ice cables will be installed.
The cables are first dropped into the leader/downspout then placed on the inside of the aluminum gutter. Once the cables are in the gutter, they will be brought up onto the roof, and installed in a serpentine pattern (up and down) on the surface just above the gutter. The last step is to plug the cable into the outlet.

How do ice cables work?
The best results have been found when these cables are turned on a day prior to a storm. The cables will then gradually warm up the gutter and the roof shingles. As the snow starts coming down it will melt as it hits the roof. However, if it were blizzard like conditions, the process will take longer as the cables will be buried and cannot keep up with the speed of snowfall.
As the snow melts, the water will travel down into the gutter which is why it’s important to install cables inside the gutter to avoid them from freezing. This is also why we stress the importance of gutter cleaning.
What you should be aware of
As mentioned before, the best results come when you plug the cables in before the storm. After you see a good amount of snow and ice melted or an increase in temperatures, DON’T FORGET to unplug them. The longer they are plugged in the more electricity you burn and thus raising your cost.
